I think this book would work well for people who have not decided where to go specifically in South Africa. So if you are planning to go to South Africa but haven’t decided on the itinerary, than this would be a great book. It tries to cover every part of a trip to South Africa, but I think it is really a case of jack of all trades but master of none. For example, there is a huge chapter all tons of different Safari destinations and lodges, only a small line on what to do other than those lodges. So it seems helpful if you haven’t booked your trip yet. I have planned my trip specifically to Jo-burg, Cape Town and my Safari was already booked, so I bought this book looking for info specifically on Jo-Burg and Cape Town without having to buy two books. I think in this respect, the book is slightly weak. Don’t get me wrong the book is a nice starting guide. But to get into details, and more varieties, I think you need a more focused book. Also this book is rather hefty and I don’t know if I want to carry around a bright orange tourist guide book in Jo-Burg.

If you are looking for a guide book which gives all the basic information needed for a trip to South Africa, this is the one. I have used the Fodor’s guides for many years and have learned to interpret the information based on previous experience with the books, so I trust them. I wish it had some more information about Namibia in it too, since my upcoming trip will also include “just over the border” Namibia areas which are off the beaten track.

During our more than 3 weeks in South Africa, we relied on the Fodor’s South Africa Travel Guide constantly. While even in the 2010 edition, some of the prices needed to be adjusted already, the information was extremely helpful. We made reservations in restaurants and received important information about sights and attractions. I would highly recommend this book.
